Diet

Hi, I adopted a greyhound 4 weeks ago, she is delighful the only problem is loose stools, she seems allergic to milk and has a sensitive tummy, at present we are giving her Purina for sensitive tummies as well as a little oily fish, cooked potato, rice and pigs ears, she has also had a couple of pork bones, (not all at the same time obviously), she has had 8 loose poos today, otherwise seems fine. Can anybody help, she will also only drink water if it is outside in a water feature, so I have to change the water feature daily???

Mine eats Wagg. I found if I tried to change her food, that would upset her too. Roll Eyes

We've had our two for just over two years now. One of the first things we discovered and were told is that milk will make them loose. We were told they were given milk if they were above their training weight to make them lose any excess.
Cassie, fortunately will eat just about anything put in front of her. Tiger is a bit more picky. We tried him on various tinned and dried foods, all of which he eventually turned his nose up at. We've gradually come round to feeding raw meat (mince) mixed with greyhound kibble.

Hi,

Now i think all greyhounds have the same problem if you've ever been to a greythound gathering of any sort, the grass will testify!!!!

Burns food is AMAZING, 63% brown rice, it states everything that is in it, not just vague words like 'cereals' where the cheapest cereals are put in whenever they like and changes with each bag. And i believe it states the actual meat content.

Burns is a little harder to get hold of than usual, but i believe they do £40 a 15kg bag free delivery, you can call them for free samples and they have trained advisers and they may send you a £5 voucher off  your first order.  And you can feed less as its all good stuff, organic, hypoalergenic etc!  Plus it is only 17% protein, so the treats they get(pig is very rich for dogs so i tend not to give hardly any of it) will keep them below their ideal 20% protein.  Bulk it out with carrots, about one a day in halves, which keeps their teeth good too. and apple cores, they love them and doesn't affect their constitution!

When i called them they were really supportive and mentioned that i was perhaps feeding too much therefore pushing evrything through his body quicker than he could solidify it...if you know what i mean. So perhaps it could be a volume issue.

hope that helps...

Did you swop him over gradually or just change him from one to the other? Is he the 12 year old?

Ok- if you've checked he's healthy then you should introduce new food gradually so their system gets used to it ... usually by adding say a quarter of the new to 3/4 of the old and mixing them up and over a week or two (guauge by the poos how they are coping with the new food) reduce the amounts of the old and increase the new till you're feeding all new. If he needs more weight you may need to add something like pilchards or cornflakes or fatty lamb meat but he should increase his weight slowly .. I love Burns food but it does tend to keep them leaner rather than fat (which is usually good).

Like us dogs can have intolerances to any food or ingredient so it may be you need to avoid chicken even or rice .. we have found both to cause hyperactivity, aggression, nervousness etc in some greys. Personally I avoid any dog food that is brightly coloured or has lots of cereal or sugars in them ...

Hope he's better now
