We want to be greyhound parents.
Jan 13th, 2010, 7:53pm

Hi, me and my girlfreind have wanted a dog for so long but everyone has been telling us that as we live in a first floor flat and we both work all day we cant have one. But we love animals so much it just crushes us to think we cant have one but understand peoples concerns. We have been investigating dogs that *may* suit our lifestyle and retired greyhounds seem amazing, all the stories of them sleeping all day makes us laugh so much. We would love to give one a home as they have the perfect temperament and also we would love to give a home to an ex racer or any one of the many that are not used for racing. If i give you some details of our lifestyle could someone kindly take a look and see what you think please.

1. We work all day 9 till 5, but we will walk before and after work.

2. Our flat is huge.

3. We have pet rats.

4. We both love excercise.

5.We live in the countryside

6. We have no plans to have children yet.

Hello there!  We have 3 greys and 2 cats and they all get on very well.  Greys are brilliant if you have to go out to work as they welcome any opportunity to snooze the day away.  There are plenty of people who have homed greys who live in flats and it works out really well for most, however I would just like to point out one thing; my 3rd grey (who we have only had for a fortnight) previously lived in a flat.  Unfortunately, she was returned after a few months because it was too much for the family (who also had a young toddler) to keep taking the dog AND the child out when the dog needed to toilet.  Obviously with a garden you can just let the dog out, but in a flat you have to get the lead on, get your coat on etc which can be tricky in the early days of toilet training, or indeed if you have to take a baby out with you too as you cannot leave it alone in the flat.  None of these problems are insurmountable (or indeed relevant to you at the moment!), and you've obviously thought long and hard about this so I would say go for it!

I see from the RGT site that you're planning on visiting Brook tomorrow?  He's gorgeous!  Make sure you pick everybody's brains, and walk as many dogs as you can.  We originally went to the kennels with a pretty little fawn bitch in mind, and ended up with our first - a big black boy!  And never regretted it - we went back 2 more times!

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Em x

At our last committee meeting it was decided that we will can no longer home to people who live in flats or maisionettes that do not have their own enclosed private garden attached.

This is due to numerous returns because of these reasons.  We have homed very successfully in the past to flats, however due to the size of a greyhound, if the grey was ill, they are so very heavy to carry up and down stairs and this poses a risk to both dog and owner.

Equally toilet training (especially middle of the night in winter) is not easy either!
